Cana / Las Perlas - Austin Bar / Patio

This project was quite the makeover. We started with an unused space in disrepair, decorated with litter, graffiti, and even a broken scooter. The goal was an inviting patio space with plenty of seating, plant life, and shade, underneath the warm glow of cafe lighting.

A few days of pressure washing, excavating, and hauling, returned us to a blank slate. We then applied two layers of of geotextile for weed prevention and compacted 3” of decomposed granite. After that, we got to work fabricating 11 heavy duty steel planters that ran the perimeter of the back fence. These have integrated seating so heavy steel brackets were welded to the front and benches were created with stained 2’x6’ lumber.

We needed to provide some shade as well as create a structure to run cables and beer lines overhead. We decided on a long arbor, sitting on 8”x8” posts with custom steel anchoring bases. Decorative supports extend 2.5’ from the bases and 2” slats were evenly spaced, running the length of the structure. We added a bar top to run the length of the arbor. We finished up construction with three large planters with on casters to occupy the upper patio. These are used to divide the space for multiple seating arrangements.

20’ graceful bamboo was installed in the planters along the fence and an assortment of banana trees and bamboo muhly dotted the landscape to add to the overall feel of the space.
